Nearly four years ago, the first Literacy for Little Ones book package had been delivered to Ministry Saint Michael’s Hospital in Stevens Point, Wisconsin. At that time, I had just begun to navigate my own ship in the waters of community service. In 2009, I never predicted that my passion for early literacy would steer me through the high seas and rolling waves of the community service sector.
Literacy for Little Ones, the program I founded, has a mission of encouraging parents to read to their newborns, which is done by donating book packages to four hospitals in North Central Wisconsin. After seeing some of my classmates struggle to stay afloat in reading, I was inspired to make a splash. I researched the effect of early literacy on the rest of a child’s education, and learned how crucial it is. This is when I set sail by writing a grant to purchase the supplies for the first hundred Literacy for Little Ones’ book packages. I recruited some of my friends to come aboard, and the journey truly started.
Since that time, Literacy for Little Ones has sailed an enormous distance. Over 3,200 book packages have been delivered, $5,500 has been raised, and 400 youth have volunteered. When I first dropped the anchor in early literacy, I was completely unaware of the ripple effect that could be created. This program cast off with just a handful of youth on deck, but now teens have begun to directly contact me to hop on board. The possibilities are endless when you put your mind into something you feel strongly about!
Now is the time to pilot your energy in creating your own ship. What cause are you passionate about? How can you make an impact in that? Finding the answers to these questions will assist you to map out your course of action. There may be no final destination as we can always continue to change the world. I encourage you all to embark on your journey as a sailor through the waters of service today!
