The Story Behind Volunteen
Most teenagers dream of having a least one parent out of the house. The reality when Simone’s Dad was deployed during the Iran-Afghanistan conflict was quite different. There were offers to drive us to school. They brought dinner, regardless of whether we needed it or not. There was no chance her father was coming home to a thinner family.
The outpouring of volunteers bringing meals, helping her mom with childcare and errands, sparked her desire to get involved and help others. As a 12-year-old volunteer at The Magic House and St Louis Crisis Nursery, she experienced the opportunity to volunteer at a young age. They had great carrots in that there was the potential for paid internships in college and small rewards for volunteers. Simone was hooked.
Simone and her younger brother Jake, created St. Louis Volunteen.com in July 2009. Jake and Simone were frustrated with the lack of information and resources available for students under age 18 that wanted to get involved in the community. There were several options to deal with the frustration. So they focused on the next logical option, which was founding a nonprofit.
There was no local resource specifically geared towards youth and family volunteerism. Simone and Jake created St. Louis Volunteen.com to fulfill that basic need and provide a one-stop search site to promote youth volunteerism.
